About Us
The Emergency Department at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center is the largest of its kind in California and among the newest and most advanced in the entire United States . Each year, we treat approximately 80,000 patients. One of Los Angeles County ’s original trauma centers, the Emergency Department (ED) and Trauma Center underwent an $11-million renovation in 2002, expanding the department to 32,000 square feet with 53 beds and creating a dedicated children’s area. Our pediatric emergency department and trauma center is one of only a few hospitals in the area that meets special criteria for providing pediatric emergency and trauma care. Each year, we treat approximately 25,000 children. We are recognized as an Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics (EDAP) with staff certified in Pediatric and Adolescent Life Support (PALS). For the most serious of cases, our pediatric emergency department provides seamless transition to our renowned pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). As paramedic base station hospitals, Long Beach Memorial and Miller Children’s Hospitals handle approximately 1,000 paramedic calls per month. Paramedic base hospitals play an important role in the assessment and treatment of patients before they arrive in the emergency department, with physicians and nurses communicating with paramedics via radio. Long Beach Memorial and Miller Children’s are staffed with mobile intensive care nurses and emergency physicians 24 hours per day, seven days a week and provide continuing education and quality improvement programs for all paramedic units that are assigned to them. In fact, Miller Children’s is the only private, not-for-profit children’s hospital in Los Angeles and Orange Counties to serve as a paramedic base.
